A person is in custody after turning themselves in following a hit and run crash that left a woman dead in Gardena Sunday night, according to the Gardena Police Department.

The incident happened on Sunday at 10:23 p.m. on the 14800 block of Western Avenue in front of West End Kitchen. The driver left their car’s bumper at the scene.

Officers and the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of a hit and run crash involving a pedestrian, according to police.

A woman who was found in the roadway was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her identity is unknown at this time pending notification of family members. According to witnesses, the woman was with her son when the crash happened.

“This street is like a freeway, they go 60-70 miles an hour every day,” said Beverly Mays, a Gardena business owner. “And they really probably should put a stoplight here because we’ve seen people get hit. It’s bad.”

Initially, the driver left the scene but later turned themselves in, according to police.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is urged to contact Sergeant V.

Gomez at 310-217-6122 or Investigator J. Zamudio at 310-217-6189.
