A 43-year-old man died after deputies found him unresponsive in his Vista jail cell early Sunday, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies doing a round of routine safety checks at the Vista Detention Facility discovered the man about 3 a.m., homicide Lt. Juan Marquez said in a news release. They called for emergency help and began administering life-saving measures, Marquez said.
Paramedics and Vista firefighters arrived at the jail and took over the emergency response, but the man he died about 3:20 a.m. before he could be taken to a hospital.
Marquez did not release the man’s name, citing the need to first notify his family of his death. The lieutenant said the man had been in custody since June 15 and was facing charges of burglary and felony vandalism.
He was the sixth person to die in custody at a San Diego County jail this year.
The department’s homicide unit is investigating the death, as is the department’s protocol when someone dies while in custody. The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board was also notified of the incident.
