A 43-year-old man who died after he was found unresponsive in his Vista jail cell over the weekend was identified Tuesday as a San Diego County resident.
Corey Michael Dean was pronounced dead shortly after he was discovered unresponsive in his Vista Detention Facility cell by sheriff’s deputies conducting routine safety checks around 3 a.m. on Sunday, Lt. Juan Marquez said.
The deputies called 911 and requested help from the facility’s medical staff, Marquez said. Paramedics and the Vista Fire Department arrived and took over performing life-saving measures.
Before he could be taken to a hospital, Dean died around 3:20 a.m., Marquez said.
Investigators said Dean had been in custody since June 15 and was facing multiple charges of burglary and felony vandalism.
He was the sixth person to die in custody at a San Diego County jail this year.
The department’s homicide unit is investigating the death, as is the department’s protocol when someone dies while in custody. The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board was also notified of the incident.
