A former Major League Baseball pitcher who grew up in the Bay Area has been found guilty of murder and attempted murder.

Prosecutors say Dan Serafini broke into his in-laws’ Lake Tahoe home in 2021 and shot them both. His father-in-law, 70-year-old Gary Spohr, died instantly, and his mother-in-law, 68-year-old Wendy Wood, survived the shooting. Wood died by suicide years later, according to NBC affiliate KCRA in Sacramento.

Prosecutors described the crimes as financially motivated.

The now 51-year-old Serafini was drafted out of high school in 1992 and pitched for six teams (Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies) over seven seasons in the majors. He graduated from Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo.

Serafini is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 18. He faces life in prison.
