Application filed to add to Glenbrook Way property
An application has been filed with the city of San Diego to add to and remodel a house in the La Jolla Heights area.
The project, which is undergoing environmental review, would add 612 square feet to a 2,252-square-foot one-story house at 2821 Glenbrook Way, convert an existing 136-square-foot area into a garage and build a new one-story, detached 1,122-square-foot accessory dwelling unit with an attached 274-square-foot garage.
The decision to approve or deny the application will be made at a public hearing at a date and time to be announced.

UC San Diego research institute expands clinical space
An additional 3,500 square feet of clinic space is coming to UC San Diego’s Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute’s main facility in La Jolla, according to the university.
The expansion will increase the institute’s capacity to serve participants in clinical trials by more than 30%, UCSD says.
ACTRI has provided research teams with shared clinical space, research coordinators, staff and lab techs, guidance and more since 2016.
The new space is intended to support over 300 clinical research studies with focuses including Parkinson’s disease, Type 2 diabetes, bipolar disorder and chronic pain.
UCSD researchers study link among stress, inflammation and pancreatic cancer
With the help of a new study, UC San Diego researchers hope they can detect pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, or PDAC — one of the most lethal and aggressive cancers — before it becomes life-threatening.
Though researchers previously had determined that inflammation and stress activate a protein in pancreas cells named STAT3, how it promotes tumor initiation, resists treatment and adapts to stress was unknown.
According to UC San Diego Health Sciences, the new study indicates that STAT3 activates “specific genes critical for adaptation to stress and inflammation.” Using a gene signature named “STRESSED,” researchers can see signs that cells may develop into full-blown pancreatic cancer.
The findings, researchers believe, can be applied to precision medicine and early-screening tools that will help them better respond to cancer treatment.
