Some properties were evacuated Friday due to a fire at a construction equipment rental business in Northridge.
A battery-powered skid steer loader burned outside the business on Napa Street between Etiwanda and Nestle avenues.
No injuries were reported.
Thick smoke was drifting from the electric skid steer in a parking lot. Firefighters said they plan to let the lithium-ion battery fire burn out.
Firefighters then extinguished what remained of the flames.
When damaged and overheated, lithium-ion batteries can ignite and even explode. Residual heat can trigger a reaction that can lead to combustion, a danger that can develop over days, weeks or months.
LAFD hazardous materials team members were at the scene to monitor air quality and evacuate surrounding properties as a precaution. All evacuations were lifted Friday afternoon.
