Crosswalks were installed at intersections near a park in a West Los Angeles neighborhood where residents took street safety matters into their own hands.
The City of Los Angeles said Friday that it will add crosswalks at the intersection near Stoner Park in Sawtelle. Last week, residents calling for safety improvements painted yellow crosswalks at four intersections around the park.
Crews later removed the DIY crosswalks. The city said it never received a request for crosswalks and no projects were approved.
The city said the new crosswalks must meet safety standards.
In a statement Friday, the matter appeared headed for a resolution when Mayor Karen Bass’ office said the city will begin crosswalk installation Friday with curb ramp and other improvements expected in the coming weeks.
“Stoner Park is a key community anchor, a place where neighbors gather, kids play, and local events bring people together,” Councilmember Traci Park said. “When we talk about where LA comes together, it’s places like Stoner Park. That’s why it’s so important to prioritize pedestrian safety and make sure everyone can get around safely.”
Video from NewsChopper4 showed crews adding white crosswalks to the intersections on Friday morning.

“This is something that is necessary,” said Audree, who was visiting the park Friday. “I’m happy about it because the people started the whole process. If the people did not paint, the government would not have come out and done what they should have done themselves.”
Residents said they are pleased with the new crosswalks, but wondered about the process.
“I think it’s just ridiculous,” said resident Daniel Leighton. “We have people who are willing to put in time to help our city, let them do that, and use these resources to help someone else who needs it.”
