State and federal Democratic lawmakers Friday expressed their support for redrawing district lines across California as proposed by Governor Gavin Newsom in response to Republican-led states’ redistricting effort.

Governor Gavin Newsom was joined by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and other elected officials.

Newsom said last week he will be working with state lawmakers to temporarily overrule the independent redistricting commission and withdraw district lines to Democrats and push out at least five of the nine Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives in the state.

His announcement came after Texas Republicans released a new congressional map proposal to help the GOP pick up five additional seats in next year’s mid-term election.

Newsom slammed Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott for trying to “rig the election” by shifting district lines in ways that would target Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“They’ve triggered this response, and we’re not going to roll over,” the governor said this week as he was taking questions from reporters on the redistricting plan. “(President Trump) recognizes he’s going to lose in the midterms, and we have the opportunity to de facto end the Trump presidency in less than 18 months. That’s what’s at stake.
