The offseason saga of Terry McLaurin has taken a new turn: The disgruntled receiver has requested a trade.

The trade request — first reported by Jordan Schultz and confirmed by NBC Washington’s JP Finlay — comes after McLaurin ended his holdout over the weekend. McLaurin’s arrival at camp was considered by many as a sign of optimism that he and the team were making progress on a new contract. Washington head coach Dan Quinn was “really pumped” to see McLaurin back in the building.

Yet that positivity was short-lived, with Thursday’s trade request potentially altering the course of McLaurin’s career and the upstart Commanders, who reached the NFC Championship Game last season in quarterback Jayden Daniels’ rookie year.

The 29-year-old McLaurin is reportedly seeking more than $30 million per year in his next deal.

McLaurin has recorded over 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last five seasons, after recording 919 receiving yards as a rookie in 2019. He’s averaged over 80 catches for 1,118 yards and 6.7 touchdowns per season in his career, making two Pro Bowls (2022, 2024) and earning All-Pro recognition (Second Team) for the first time last season.

A trade request, though, is just that: a request. And this could be the latest negotiation move as McLaurin looks to secure what will likely be his final big-money deal in the NFL.

Yet for the time being, expect McLaurin’s uncertain status in Washington to resurface as one of the biggest stories in the NFL.

Washington Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin requested a trade amid ongoing contract extension negotiations, Team Insider JP Finlay confirmed.
