Fear and Missed Appointments: How ICE Raids Are Hurting Public Health in Southern California

In Southern California, a wave of immigration enforcement has brought more than just anxiety to local neighborhoods—it’s also disrupting healthcare for thousands of families. Since federal immigration agents ramped up operations this month, clinics and hospitals have noticed a sharp drop in patients showing up for checkups, vaccinations, and even essential treatments.

Many once-busy parks and shopping areas are now quiet as undocumented residents and their loved ones stay home, worried that a simple trip outside could end in detention. Healthcare workers say this fear is keeping people from getting the care they need, from routine childhood vaccines to managing chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

To reach patients who are too afraid to visit in person, some clinics are offering virtual appointments, home visits, and even delivering medications. But doctors warn that not everything can be handled remotely. Skipping preventive care now, they say, could lead to more serious health emergencies later.

One clinic leader described the situation as “frightening and chaotic,” noting that missed appointments have more than tripled since the raids began. Patients often explain that they’re staying home specifically because of ICE activity in the area.

The impact isn’t the same everywhere—some clinics report a surge in no-shows, while others see little change. But the overall sense of fear is unmistakable. Some families worry that using health services could put them at risk, especially after reports that federal health data has been shared with immigration authorities, even though there’s no evidence it’s led to enforcement actions so far.

Local officials and healthcare providers are urging anyone who needs medical attention not to delay care. Still, many fear that the longer this climate of uncertainty lasts, the more it will cost—not just in dollars, but in the health and well-being of the entire community.
