San Diego State is close to distributing more tickets for its football game Saturday night against Cal than it has for any home game since playing former Pac-12 foe UCLA two years ago.
SDSU coach Sean Lewis said Wednesday morning that there were 4,000 tickets remaining for the game at 32,500-seat Snapdragon Stadium. By mid-afternoon, amid a “flash sale,” fewer than 2,000 tickets remained on TicketMaster website.
There were 32,017 tickets distributed when SDSU played the Bruins early in the 2023 season, with an in-house crowd of 25,549.
“I’m real proud of the efforts of our ticketing office, marketing office, the support staff, all parties involved,” Lewis said. “On Saturday night, the spot to be in San Diego County is Snapdragon Stadium.”
The Aztecs have made a substantial push to get people to the stadium against the Bears.
SDSU season-ticket holders have been offered two complimentary tickets to the Cal game. Lewis said Monday that 4,000 tickets were given away over the weekend when SDSU staffers attended events from downtown to Pacific Beach to North County.
“The staff did a great job of being present, being seen and making it known how we are San Diego’s football team and that we need their support,” Lewis said. “Their response was great.”
In addition, students were given 3,000 tickets more than their usual 5,000 allotment.
The Aztecs announced the flash sale Wednesday morning on social media, in an email on Wednesday afternoon as well as on a banner ad on the SDSU athletics website. The $15 cost for tickets originally priced at $65 and $115 represented a significant discount. The sale was advertised for “a limited time” and did not specifically say when it would end.
Those interested in making a purchase were directed to Goaztecs.com/flashsale. The message “Oops! We are experiencing technical difficulties” popped up on the screen during a late afternoon attempt to access the website.
SDSU (1-1) is a 12 1/2-point underdog against Cal (3-0), which is coming off a 27-14 victory over Minnesota. The Aztecs were idle over the weekend. They opened the season with a 42-0 victory over Stony Brook before losing 36-13 on the road against Washington State. The announced crowd against Stony Brook was 20,624 (13,516 turnstile).
