Halloween festivities from pumpkin festivals and trick-or-treating to spooky places and ghostly campouts are happening across San Diego County. Here’s a guide to community Halloween events for all ages.
ALPINE
Pumpkin Bash & Spooky Campover: This event starts with a campout with pumpkin carving, all-ages haunted house and other activities. Donation is $80; $55 for age 12 and younger or $50/$35 for members. A Pumpkin Bash begins the next morning at 10 a.m. Dress up in your costume and watch the rescued big cats and bears devour treats out of pumpkins. Boo at the Zoo: Meet spooky and not-so-spooky animals in a flashlight tour at Wild Wonders animal refuge, 5712 Vía Montellano, Oct. 18-19 and Oct. 25-26. Pumpkin train rides: The Campo Railroad Museum is offering its annual Pumpkin Express Halloween Celebration on Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 4-26. Ride decorated vintage 1920s rail cars through the San Diego County mountains. Walk through the themed display building with Halloween scenes and haunted train cars. Ride a train to a pumpkin patch where kids can pick pumpkins to decorate. Trains leave at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. from the Campo Depot, 750 Depot St. Tickets are $18.95-$39.95. Halloween Spooktacular: There will be trick-or-treating in costumes, carnival-style games, spooky characters and music from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 25 at The Forum Carlsbad, 1923 Calle Barcelona. Jurassic Fright at Pumpkin Patch: Open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in Oct. 3 through Oct. 31 at 1050 Cannon Road. There’s a haunted corn maze, marigold fields, bounceland, Jurassic Fright, a tractor ride and sheep, goats and rabbits. Admission is $15; free for kids 3 and younger plus fees for activities. Brick-or-Treat: LEGOLAND California holds its Brick-or-Treat Monster Party on weekends in October with entertainment, dance parties, live music, costumed entertainers and trick-or-treating. The party is included with park admission. As part of its Halloween season celebration, there will be costumed characters, décor and seasonal treats daily through Oct. 31. Free treats: Village Walk at Eastlake hosts kids ages 12 and younger dressed in costume and accompanied by an adult at a free trick-or-treat event from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 31. Bring a bag to collect your treats or pick up a free treat bag and a coupon booklet at the Halloween table near Mission Federal. CORONADO

Haunting gondola ride: ‘A Haunting in Venice’ cruises start at 3 p.m. with cruises departing by reservation until 9 p.m. Oct. 26-31, run by The Gondola Company. Mainstreet Goes Ghostly: Witches and ghosts will be wandering throughout Coronado’s central downtown from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 31 and merchants are set to welcome trick-or-treaters for the Mainstreet Goes Ghostly event hosted by Coronado Mainstreet. Pumpkin Station: Festivities include a carousel, rides, giant slides, a Ferris wheel, a train jump, a petting zoo and a play center, along with a pumpkin patch from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays to Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Sept. 26 through Oct. 26 at 15555 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Ticketed attractions include mechanical rides, giant slides, a jumpee activity, petting zoo and antique carousel. EL CAJON
HauntFest: The city of El Cajon is putting on a Halloween event from 4 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17 in downtown El Cajon with a costume contest, amusement rides, a candy trail, trunk or treat with classic cars and a haunted maze along with dancing and a DJ, an outdoor movie screening of Monsters University and a reptile petting zoo. There will also be a sensory tent offering a quiet space. The Magnolia will host its annual Haunted Circus: Monsters at Play, featuring jugglers, contortionists, stilt walkers, hoop throwers, aerialists and acrobats at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Free. elcajon.gov.

ENCINITAS
Trick-or-treating downtown: The free annual Safe Trick or Treat will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. Many downtown businesses will have goodies for kids. Costumed trick-or-treaters can stroll South Coast Highway 101, from Encinitas Boulevard to K Street. There will be Halloween-themed activities and games for kids along with entertainment. Haunted Hotel: The historic grounds of the Olivenhain Meeting Hall will be transformed into a Haunted Hotel Friday and Saturday nights from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 10-11, Oct. 17-18 and Oct. 24-25 at 423 Rancho Santa Fe Road. There will be spooky scenes ranging from a Haunted Swamp, Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory and a Witches’ Lair to a Candy Mystery Trail. Actors are Scouts, ages 11 to 17. There will be games at the carnival and refreshment to purchase. Tickets are $8; cash and credit are accepted at the door. The event is a fundraiser for Scout Troop 2000. Annual Pumpkinfest: Free, family event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 at Escondido High School, 1535 North Broadway, behind the baseball field. There will be pumpkins grown by Escondido High School students for sale along with tractor rides, carnival games, a petting zoo, face painting, crafts, food, plants, live music, entertainment and a classic car show hosted by the Escondido High School Auto Shop Department.
Harvest Party: The annual event features pony rides, carnival-style games and rides, face painting and balloon animals from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 25 for families with children ages 2 through sixth grade at Emmanuel Faith Community Church, 639 E. 17th St. Tickets are $10 for ages 2 through sixth grade, and include hot dogs, cotton candy and popcorn. Howl-O-Ween tours at wolf center: The California Wolf Center, a nonprofit working on the recovery of wolves in the wild, will host its annual Howl-O-Ween tour at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at the conservation facility, Tall Pine and K Q Ranch roads. Visitors can make Halloween-themed items like pumpkin-spiced meatballs to share with the center’s ambassador wolves during their tour, in a fun, spooky setting. Costumes are welcome. Spooky campout: The annual Spooky Camp-o-Ween is back from Oct. 17-19 and Oct. 24-26 at Lake Jennings, 10108 Bass Road. Check in Friday and pick up creepy crafts, then listen to and tell spooky stories around the campfire. There will be campground trick-or-treating, a scavenger hunt and a campsite decorating contest. Scuba divers will transform the aquarium into an underwater pumpkin patch with their underwater pumpkin carving skills. Visitors will also have access to the new Living Seas exhibit. Once Upon a Halloween: Stroll the haunted halls of Old Poway Park’s Haunted House from 4 to 9 p.m. Oct. 25 at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road. A costume parade starts at 3:45 p.m.; meet at Veterans Park. Highlights include a haunted house, carnival games, treats and train rides. Admission to the haunted house is $1 (not recommended for kids under age 5); there is a small fee for train rides, carnival games and treats. New this year is Trunk or Treat in partnership with the Poway Chamber of Commerce; cars will be parked along Midland Road. Howl-O-Ween festival: Helen Woodward Animal Center hosts its Howl-O-Ween Harvest Family Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 11, 18, 25 and 26, featuring hands-on animal encounters, trick-or-treat stations, a free pumpkin patch, festive games, crafts, face painting and photo booth. Halloween at the Station: Liberty Station puts on its annual free, family-friendly Halloween celebration from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 26. Highlights include a Hollywood car show, trick-or-treating throughout Liberty Station, live DJ entertainment, crafts, inflatable obstacle courses, a cornhole tournament, crafts and costume contest for all ages with prizes. Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations for the Feeding Heroes initiative to help local military families in need. Halloween at the Station is at 2751 Dewey Road. Fall Fest: City Farmers Nursery holds a Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 11 at 3110 Euclid Ave. The nursery will host 30 local craftspeople and artists, including potters, bakers, painters and welders, selling handmade items. At 10 a.m. there will be the 40th annual zucchini and pumpkin growing contest with a “King Zuke” trophy for the winner, followed by the crowning of the junior gardener winner of the pumpkin growing contest (ages 3-16), at 11 a.m. At noon, there will be free games and prizes for children. BeerFest at boardwalk: Belmont Park’s annual Fall Fest returns to the beachfront boardwalk each weekend through October with live “Pumpkin Jam” performances, seasonal treats, free trick-or-treating on Sunday and special events like Trunk or Treat and the second annual BeerFest on Oct. 26. Howl-O-Ween at SeaWorld: Howl-O-Scream is a nighttime Halloween event for mature audiences (separately ticketed), featuring haunted houses, scare zones, live performances and coasters on select nights through Nov. 1. SeaWorld’s family-friendly Spooktacular features trick-or-treating included in park admission, a pumpkin patch and other family festivities. The Halloween-themed Howl-O-Sprint 5K run/walk is at Oct. 19 for all ages featuring a course that goes through different animal and marine life exhibits. There is also a 1-mile Kids Fun Run. Halloween Bash on the USS Midway: The Goonies Edition is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 24 bringing the spirit of “The Goonies” on the hangar deck of the USS Midway in honor of the film’s 40th anniversary. Highlights include a Truffle Shuffle Dance-Off, a DJ and iconic movie clips playing on the big screen, treasure hunt trick-or-treating and pub trivia, along with costume contest. Haunts of Balboa Park: The spooky experience features two haunts at Balboa Park: the mile-long Haunted Trail and eXperiment Maze with frightening features from ghost-filled graveyard to ghoul bus. Master of the Macabre: Stories by Master of the Macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, will be featured at 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Oct. 17 to Nov. 1 at Villa Montezuma Museum in Sherman Heights. Trunk or Treat at car museum: The San Diego Automotive Museum puts on its annual Trunk or Treat from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at 2080 Pan American Plaza in Balboa Park. Halloween Carnival: The 68th annual event is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Solana Vista Elementary School, 780 Santa Victoria, hosted by the Solana Beach Schools Foundation for Solana Beach School District families. Highlights include games, bounces houses, a petting zoo, pony rides and treats. Costumes are encouraged. Proceeds benefit Discovery Enrichment at Solana Vista and Skyline elementary schools. Bates Pumpkin Patch: Hay rides, a petting zoo, a straw maze, a bounce house and slides and pony rides on weekends along with food and lots of pumpkins and gourds are all part of the festivities through Oct. 31 at Bates Nut Farm, 15954 Valley Woods Road. Fall Festival Fridays are from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10, 17 and 24. The farm is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays with free parking and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Trunk or Treat and car show: Pride of Vista Lions Club hosts its Muscles on Main Street Car Show with a Halloween twist from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at 25 Main St. with trunk-or-treating. Highlights include a costume contests, a kids’ game area, a DJ and music, and classic cars and motorcycles. Check-in starts at 7:30 a.m. Car registration entry fee is $35. Fright Night: The Halloween annual event is from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 in historic downtown Vista and features a haunted house at the Avo Theater, trick-or-treating and a costume contest. Local businesses, Vista Fire fighters and sheriffs deputies will pass out candy. Haunted house admission is $6; $4 for kids 10 and younger at The Avo Ticket Box day of event.
