Three years from today, the torch will be lit in LA.

Monday marks three years out from the Opening Ceremony of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The city will be hosting its third Olympics (1932 and 1984), and the Summer Games will be back in the U.S. for the first time since 1996 in Atlanta.

To celebrate three years out, LA28 released its first look at the competition schedule for the 2028 Olympics.

Field hockey, basketball, rugby sevens, water polo, handball and cricket will be the first sports to kick off at the LA Olympics with competition beginning on July 12, 2028, two days before the Opening Ceremony.

Canoe slalom will be the only sport to take place on July 14 (Day 0), which is otherwise reserved for the Opening Ceremony. Instead of taking place in LA, canoe slalom, as well as softball, will be held in Oklahoma City.

July 15 (Day 1) is when the action gets underway in full, and it will feature a twist. Athletics and swimming will swap their typical places in the Olympic schedule, with track and field taking over the first week of competition and swimming moving to the second week. The marathons will still be held in the final weekend of the Olympics.

The first medal of the 2028 LA Olympics will be handed out in triathlon on July 15 along the coastline of Venice Beach. Swimming will bring the Olympics to a close with the final events being held on July 30 (Day 16) at SoFi Stadium, which will be branded as 2028 Stadium during the Games.

July 29 (Day 15) will be the busiest day on the Olympic podium, with 16 gold and bronze medal matches in team sports and 19 individual medal events.

LA28 said a more detailed schedule with medal events and gender order will be released later this year.

The Opening Ceremony in 2028 will be a dual-site event at a historic Los Angeles venue and a stadium making its Olympics debut. Ted Chen reports for the NBC4 News at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
