Re “Proposal to mandate $25 minimum wage for San Diego tourism workers moves forward” (June 25): I’ve been observing the comments/opinions on this and cannot understand how this is being considered.
Look, all work is noble and anyone who works, at any level, deserves credit. However, the level of pay at any job is based on one simple premise: What are the barriers to entry required for the job (level of education, special training and unique skills)? The lower the barriers, the lower the pay. Artificially raising pay without considering the unintended consequences of such actions (layoffs, businesses moving, etc.) is not the solution.
Oh, wait, I forgot, we are talking about politicians pandering to their base and conveniently ignoring the reality that California is ranked 48th in business friendliness.
