As a Bay Park resident and frequent visitor to Mission Bay, I’m alarmed by the growing number of motorhomes parked for weeks or months around this iconic public space. While I recognize the challenges of homelessness, the current situation is unacceptable.
Mission Bay should be safe, clean and welcoming — but RV encampments have led to degraded park conditions, environmental hazards, reduced access and frequent incidents of drug use, public defecation, dangerous campfires and threatening behavior. These vehicles are being used as illegal long-term residences despite clear laws prohibiting it.
I urge the city to act — through enforcement, new regulations and more legal parking alternatives for vehicle dwellers. Ticketing and towing could deter abuse and generate revenue. We can be compassionate while still protecting the public’s right to enjoy one of San Diego’s most valuable assets.
