The Del Mar Foundation has partnered with the City of Del Mar to bring five contemporary sculptures to highly visible locations in Del Mar’s downtown area for a temporary outdoor sculpture exhibit, scheduled to be a 23-month display.

The sculptures, which were installed July 14-16, were celebrated at an Artists’ Reception at Town Hall on July 16, with artists Ron Tatro and Peter Mitten providing insight into their artistic goals and processes. Tatro, who has two artworks from his “Abstract Heads” series in the exhibit, has stated his interest in making sculptures “that are personal, artistically inventive, joyous, and accessible.” Mitten’s Cloud 7 sculpture reflects his interest in “discovering geometric patterns in nature, whether in moisture, cell structure, or beehives,” according to a news release.

Artists Hugo Heredia and Delos Van Earl also have sculptures on display in the new exhibit. Heredia’s new sculpture, Dirección Impredecible, which incorporates recycled green water bottles, is the first in a series he says is intended to “create a dialogue between the man-made and natural worlds, inviting viewers to reconsider the beauty in everyday objects,” the news release stated. Delos Van Earl’s Red Seeker, from his Creatures series, invites viewers to interpret the abstract creature based on what they see.

The Del Mar Foundation has published a new Del Mar Art Walk Map to encourage residents and visitors to enjoy Del Mar’s outdoor art in an easy one-mile walk. The map features the newly-installed sculptures, and also includes other outdoor sculptures in the city’s permanent art collection, along with the sculptures in the Del Mar Plaza’s public art collection. All of the sculptures in the temporary exhibit are for sale. For more information on this exhibit, and to download the Art Walk Map, go to delmarfoundation.org/art.
