Lois Higgins is such a valuable and multi-talented volunteer for Del Mar Community Connections that this is her second time being recognized as Volunteer of the Month for the nonprofit organization, according to a news release.
Higgins was first recognized in December 2022 for her efforts with the Essential Transportation team and for leading a beach walk group. Her interest and volunteer work now includes assuming the leadership of the DMCC Trailblazers, a monthly trail walking group planned in partnership with the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, which meets every third Monday morning.
DMCC Executive Director Ashley Simpkins praised Higgins by stating in the news release, “DMCC is so fortunate to have Lois as a volunteer program leader! We appreciate her perseverance in working to create a fun and popular opportunity for fitness, fresh air and friendship, and we particularly appreciate the careful consideration she gives to the individual needs of the various participants.”
Higgins has been a resident of Del Mar for over 40 years and San Diego County for over 60 years. She enjoyed a long career in project management for a utility company, overseeing coordination and customer service with commercial and residential builders. Higgins credits that professional experience and her co-workers for teaching her the value of teamwork. She also takes deep pride and joy from her stepchildren, granddaughter and great granddaughter who now live elsewhere but still consider Del Mar “home.”
In addition to volunteering with DMCC, Higgins volunteers with two other organizations and states, “I have always enjoyed helping people as I find I usually get more from the people that I help than I give them.” Higgins spends non-volunteer time reading, exercising at the gym or beach, or playing pickleball. After traveling the world with her late husband, Ron, Higgins is focusing on visiting and spending time with loved ones in Mill Valley, Lake Tahoe, Kauai and Wisconsin.
