A distraught family in Orange County is demanding answers after they say their dog was shot multiple times by police officers.

The owner of the dog says officers were responding to the home for a family dispute on July 30 when an officer shot his dog at least three times.

Surveillance video shared with NBC4 shows a police unit pulling up in front of a home on Orange Avenue. Shortly after, a dog walks out with at least two people, police then back away and point what appears to be a gun at the dog.

According to Nathalie Garcia with the Santa Ana Police Department, officers were attacked by a very aggressive dog that leg to one of them, discharging their weapon.

Police say the dog was taken to an animal hospital in stable condition, but could not confirm how shots were fired.

As a result of the injuries, the family says they had to make the difficult decision to put “Max” down.

The incident remains under investigation. Santa Ana police say they are in contact with the family.
