Smoke from a wildfire in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties is affecting air quality to start the week in Los Angeles.
The Gifford Fire was estimated Monday morning at more than 65,000 acres. The fire started Friday in Los Padres National Forest. Containment was at 3 percent.
“We have some smoky conditions from fires in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, so the air quality here is not going to be the best,” said NBCLA forecaster Belen De Leon.
The haze drifting south along the coast also created a brilliant reddish orange sunrise Monday morning. Smoke can dim the sun, making the sky appear more red and orange.
Air quality health safety tips
The South Coast Air Quality Management District offered the following tips for people in areas impacted by wildfire smoke.
- Limit your exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed or seeking alternate shelter.
- Avoid vigorous physical activity.
- Run your air conditioning and/or an air purifier. If possible, do not use swamp coolers or whole house fans that bring in outside air.
- Avoid burning wood in your fireplace or firepit and minimize sources of indoor air pollution such as candles, incense, pan-frying, and grilling.
- If you must be outside, a properly fit N95 or P100 respirator may provide some protection.
