A man was arrested Thursday for an alleged hate-motivated assault on a truck driver in Irvine, authorities said.

The road rage incident happened on Tuesday around 9:30 a.m. along Sand Canyon Avenue near the 5 Freeway, according to Irvine police.

Robert Leon Tackett, 54, became hostile, driving aggressively while shouting racial slurs at the victim, police said. Tackett proceeded to throw a hot cup of coffee at the truck driver, some of which landed on his face and hands.

The victim filmed most of the interaction that showed Tackett driving up against the driver with a cup in his hand.

Tackett was arrested on suspicion of a hate crime and aggravated assault, police said.

Investigators are asking other victims, witnesses, or anyone with more footage of the incident to contact Irvine police.
