John Mara, president and CEO of the New York Giants, has cancer, he said Monday in a statement released on the team’s website.

Mara says he is optimistic about his diagnosis and has a strong medical team. The Giants’ co-owner described the diagnosis as recent. He didn’t specify the kind of the cancer, or the course of treatment he was undergoing.

“I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome,” the statement said. “I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support—personally, professionally, and medically. I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.”

The news comes a day after Big Blue notched its first win of the season with first-round rookie Jaxson Dart under center.

Mara is co-owner of the Giants, with his family holding a 50% stake in the franchise. He inherited leadership of the team after his father died in 2005. Steve Tisch holds the other 50%.
