Authorities are investigating after a Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a man in North Hills on Wednesday.
Officers responded around 5:23 p.m. to Parthenia Street near the 405 Freeway to multiple calls of a man with a gun, according to the LAPD.
“Our airship was already overhead and directed officers here to the 405 Freeway and Parthenia, where they encountered the armed suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” said LAPD Captain Mike Bland in a press conference Wednesday night.
The alleged armed man was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the man was not immediately available.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, and the incident is still under investigation, according to Bland.
No officers or community members were reported injured.
There have been at least 32 shootings involving LAPD officers in 2025, compared to 21 during this time in 2024.
Chief Jim McDonnell said earlier this week that the department is concerned and examining this year’s shootings for any common factors.
“There are fewer violent crimes being committed in the city, and yet, we’re seeing a greater number of officer-involved shootings. In those shootings, our officers are facing somebody who is, for the most part, armed and assaultive,” Chief Jim McDonnell told NBCLA Tuesday.
McDonnell added that 15 of the 2025 shootings involved people allegedly armed with guns or replica guns (Seven were real firearms, while eight were facsimiles) compared with 10 firearms or firearm replicas in all of 2024.
NBCLA editor Missael Soto contributed to this report.
