With a special proclamation, San Diego City Council declared July 22 to be Holly McClurg Day in the city in honor of the retiring Del Mar Union School District superintendent.

Council President Joe LaCava congratulated McClurg on her retirement from a 38-year career in public education, the last 16 years spent in the Del Mar district, where all nine schools are geographically in the city of San Diego.  LaCava listed some landmarks in her 13 years as superintendent such as setting strategic plans, enduring the challenges of the pandemic, and the passing of general obligation bonds for school improvements and construction which led to the new Pacific Sky School, the Del Mar Heights School rebuild, and the modernized Del Mar Hills Academy, which will welcome students back for the first day of school on Aug. 11.

“The students, parents and community of the Del Mar Union School District and this council are grateful for your leadership,” LaCava said. “You’ve been a fierce advocate for both your students and staff, creating an environment for high quality teaching and learning.”

In her comments, McClurg said it has been a privilege to serve as the superintendent, always doing what’s best for children. “I know our district is in good hands moving forward,” she said.

Last week, the board announced that Marisa Janicek has been selected as the finalist for the district’s next superintendent. Janicek comes to Del Mar from the El Segundo Unified School District, where she served as assistant superintendent of educational services for the past seven years. The board will vote on Janicek’s employment contract at its Aug. 20 meeting. During the transitional period, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Chris Delehanty will serve as acting superintendent.
