There was never a doubt in Northern Ireland.

Scottie Scheffler cruised to victory at The Open Championship on Sunday, posting a 3-under final round (17-under overall) to secure his fourth career major by four strokes.

It was Scheffler’s first time lifting the Claret Jug after previous major wins at the Masters (2022, 2024) and PGA Championship (2025).

The World No. 1 has dominated the sport over the past few years, and 2025 has been no different — with two major wins and four top-10 major finishes. He now needs a U.S. Open win to complete the career grand slam, which Rory McIlroy did at the Masters in April.

This weekend at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, Scheffler’s eye was always on the trophy. He pulled into the lead on Friday with a 7-under second round. That momentum carried into Saturday, when Scheffler posted a 4-under, bogey-free round to take a four-shot lead.

Sunday was more of the same for the Texas native, who pulled ahead by seven strokes in the early going. The only hiccup for Scheffler came on the eighth hole, when he double bogeyed after taking two shots to get out of a fairway sand trap. But Scheffler was flawless the rest of the way, with eight pars and two birdies to close out the tournament.

The next-closest player was Harris English, who finished four shots back at 13-under in second. English was also second to Scheffler at the PGA Championship in May. McIlroy, playing in his home country, was tied for seventh at 10-under for the tournament. Defending champion Xander Schauffele was also 10-under.

While the major championships are now complete for the 2025 season, there’s still plenty of golf to come. The FedEx Cup playoffs and Ryder Cup are on the calendar for August and September, respectively.

The Golf Champion Trophy, commonly known as the Claret Jug, is one of sports’ oldest and most unique prizes.
