Investigators are trying to piece together how a stolen airplane ended up at San Gabriel Valley Airport Sunday in El Monte Sunday night.
El Monte police said that they were told to be on the lookout for a Cessna plane that was stolen from La Verne Airport. Then at around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, officers and security guards spotted the plane on the tarmac of San Gabriel Valley Airport.
When officers inspected the plane, no one was inside, and there were no signs of forced entry, the police department said.
Investigators believe the airplane, painted in red and yellow, must have been flown in. If it was towed into San Gabriel Valley Airport, someone would have noticed it or found it suspicious, police said.
The owner has been contacted but said he or she does not feel safe flying without getting it inspected.
It was not immediately clear whether police identified the theft suspect.
