Can MLS’ best players exact revenge?

The 2025 MLS All-Star Game will see a familiar format, as the league’s top talents will take on Liga MX’s All-Stars in a battle of bragging rights.

In the 2024 edition, which saw the league move away from facing top European teams following a 5-0 loss to England’s Arsenal in 2023, MLS lost 4-1 to Liga MX’s best.

Liga MX will have many of its stars return along with new faces. Forwards Alexis Vega and Henry Martin, midfielders Marcel Ruiz and 16-year-old Gilberto Mora, and defenders Israel Reyes and Sergio Ramos are among the players to watch, with Mexican starter Luis Malagon in net.

For MLS, there is doubt whether Inter Miami star Lionel Messi will play after being voted in by fans. If not, Nashville’s Sam Surridge, LAFC’s Denis Bouanga, and San Diego FC’s Anders Dreyer and Chucky Lozano could play big roles.

In midfield, MLS will have Cincinnati’s Evander, Real Salt Lake’s Diego Luna and San Jose Earthquake’s Cristian Espinoza, as all three are prominent goal threats. Defensively, Miami’s Jordi Alba, Orlando City’s Alex Freeman and Columbus Crew’s Max Arfsten are involved, with Vancouver Whitecaps breakout goalie Yohei Takaoka looking to stand out.
