The 49ers received devastating news on Monday morning.

Defensive end Nick Bosa, who left Sunday’s 16-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals with a right knee injury and did not return, suffered a season-ending torn ACL, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters via conference call on Monday afternoon. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news Monday morning.

Bosa left the game in the first quarter and immediately went to the blue medical tent, where he eventually reappeared and gave a thumbs-down sign, which was an early indication that the injury could be serious.

Shanahan stated after the game that the team was hopeful it was not an ACL injury for Bosa after the initial assessment on the sideline, but later clarified that it still was a concern heading into Bosa’s MRI on Monday.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, their worst fears were realized.

Bosa suffered a torn ACL in his left knee back in Week 2 of the 2020 NFL season, and now has suffered a similar injury in his right knee.

The 49ers, similar to five years ago, now will be without their star pass-rusher for the remainder of the young season.
