It’s a new era for the New York Giants.
Rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart reportedly is taking over as starting quarterback, with veteran Russell Wilson benched effective immediately, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday.
Dart’s debut will come on Sunday against Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4. The Giants, at 0-3, head into the home matchup against the undefeated Chargers needing a spark that Wilson wasn’t providing.
The former Super Bowl MVP was handed the starting job after signing a one-year, $10.5 million contract with the Giants in March. The team also added Jameis Winston as another quarterback option before trading up to draft Dart at No. 25 overall a month later.
Wilson struggled early and often, though, leading to the quick switch. In his Giants debut, he was just 17 of 37 for 168 yards as the team had as many points scored as punts (6). He shined in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys, passing for 450 yards before a costly overtime interception led to another loss. Then, on Sunday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, Wilson had two interceptions and just 160 yards.
Dart, 22, impressed in three preseason games — completing 32 of 47 passes for 372 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, plus another score on the ground. He has been on the field in limited packages through the first three weeks, often rushing plays before quickly returning to the bench for Wilson.
The Ole Miss alum had mixed reviews heading into the draft, but Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen were decisive in trading up for him. New York gave up three draft picks — a second- and third-round pick in 2025 and a third in 2026 — to acquire Dart.
Now, he gets his first chance to be the franchise quarterback that New York has been wanting since Eli Manning retired in 2019.
